If a subscription to ChatGPT Plus, a Netflix renewal, an AWS invoice or a Spotify charge has recently failed on your local card, the good news is that the fix is almost always the same across all of them. This is a practical walkthrough: what actually happens at each step, and how to set things up once so you stop having to deal with it every month.
Why these four in particular
Netflix, AWS, ChatGPT Plus and Spotify Premium are the services we see fail most often on Nigerian and Kenyan debit cards. Despite being very different products, they share three technical properties that combine badly with local card rules:
- They bill in US dollars from US-registered merchant accounts, which lands them under international merchant category codes (MCCs) that local issuers can restrict.
- They use recurring billing, meaning every month your bank has to approve a charge from a foreign digital-services merchant — which is exactly the flow local FX rules are most cautious about.
- They have no tolerant retry logic for users in markets with FX restrictions. A single decline often means the subscription is cancelled and you have to start over.
The setup: one-time, about ten minutes
- Create your LCash account. Download the app, enter your phone and email, complete the KYC check with your NIN (Nigeria) or national ID (Kenya) plus a selfie.
- Top up your wallet. Fund the account from a local bank transfer, debit card, USSD (Nigeria) or M-Pesa (Kenya). You see the USD you will receive before you confirm. For a single month of the four services above, roughly $70 covers the bill.
- Issue your virtual card. Tap “Create card” in the app. The card number, expiry and CVV are available immediately.
- Paste the card into each service. Replace whatever local card is currently on file for Netflix, AWS, ChatGPT Plus and Spotify with the new LCash card. Save.
- Leave the subscription alone. Next billing cycle, the charge lands on the LCash card and clears against your USD balance. No more monthly drama.
Service-specific notes
Netflix
Netflix tries to re-authorise cards every month before the bill falls due. If you just swapped to LCash, you may see a small authorisation hold appear and clear on your wallet a few days before the real charge; this is normal and it is how Netflix confirms the card is still good. If the hold succeeds, the monthly charge will clear.
AWS
AWS billing is post-paid — it charges you at the beginning of each month for what you used the previous month. Make sure you have enough USD in the wallet to cover your actual usage, not just your estimate. AWS will retry a failed card a couple of times before suspending services, so even if you forget to top up on time you usually have a few days of grace.
ChatGPT Plus
ChatGPT Plus renews exactly 30 days after your last successful payment. It does not retry on failure: a single declined renewal cancels the subscription and you have to subscribe again. With LCash, as long as the wallet has $20 at the renewal moment, the charge clears without any extra step from you.
Spotify Premium
Spotify is the most tolerant of the four. Even if the first attempt declines, it will retry for several days before downgrading the account to free. That said, if your local card was the one declining, swapping to LCash removes the retries entirely — the first attempt clears.
If a payment still fails
It is worth knowing what to check, in order:
- Balance. The app shows your USD balance on the home screen. If it is below the charge amount, that is the reason.
- Card status. Pull up the card in the app and make sure it is active and that “online payments” is toggled on. Disputes or fraud holds will show up here.
- Merchant side. Occasionally the service itself is the one with the issue — a billing-system outage, or an address-verification mismatch. Updating the billing address on the merchant side to match what you entered in LCash KYC usually fixes this.

The bigger picture
Paying ChatGPT or Netflix is not the goal. The goal is to stop spending mental energy on whether your card will work this month. Once the LCash card is in place for all four services above, the entire subscription stack goes quiet. You notice it the first time you realise you have not had to think about a payment for six weeks.
